Economics Minister dismissed from office

Take note – story published 2 years ago

Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš has issued an order on the resignation of the Minister of Economics, Jānis Vitenbergs (National Alliance), Latvian Television reported May 12.

The order was issued by Kariņš taking into account the decision of the Saeima faction of KPV LV to withdraw its nominated Minister of Economics and on the basis of the duties of Prime Minister under the Cooperation Agreement.

Minister for Agriculture Kaspars Gerhards (NA) has been appointed as Minister for Economics for the period up to the approval of a new Minister.

The order will take effect from Friday, May 14.

The coalition politicians contacted by LTV avoided saying whether more changes could occur in the government.

“If Krišjānis Kariņš holds on to the coalition agreement and interprets it that Jānis Vitenbergs is removed, then inevitably it means writing a new coalition agreement. And the division of responsibility is then an issue that will be reconsidered. Of course, the proportion of responsibilities will not be as they are now,” said Raivis Dzintars, Chairman of KPV LV parliamentary faction.

“It is clear that the situation with the faction of KPV LV is a source of instability in the government coalition and that the balance that has been so far is changing. And though formally the Prime Minister is right, and in such a case the coalition agreement calls for the removal of the Minister, in reality the faction of KPV LV has shrunk significantly. Nor is it really clear what the total number of votes of the governing parties in parliament is. This means that negotiations will be needed and the Prime Minister will have to call on parties to negotiate how to further develop cooperation,” said Juris Pūce, Saeima deputy.
