Saeima committee nays idea of new ministerial office

Take note – story published 1 year ago

On November 29, the majority of the Saeima Legal Affairs Committee, before the final reading, again rejected amendments to the law which would provide for the creation of a new position of the Minister for Climate and Energy, LETA reported.

The Commission also again rejected the amendments to the State Administration Structure Law, which provided for the intention of the future coalition to introduce deputy ministers.

The Commission has thus also rejected directing the draft law for consideration by the Saeima.

None of the opposition's proposals received the support of the commission's majority, either. For example, MPs rejected the proposal by the “Progressives” Saeima faction to extend the functions of the Minister for Climate and Energy, including the Minister's responsibility for the environment.

The proposals of the Greens and Farmers Union (ZZS) to create new ministerial positions were also rejected, either by combining the responsibilities of the Ministers of Economics and Transport or by the Ministers of Economy, Climate, Environmental Protection, and Energy.

According to the Committee chairman Andrejs Judins (New Unity), it would be possible to discuss the opposition proposals if the Saeima, for example, devoted two years to improving the relevant laws.
