The court imposed an additional two-year probation watch alongside the eight-year and six-month prison sentence.
Genādijs Silonovs, a former State Security Committee (KGB) employee, has also been found guilty in the case and has been sentenced to 7 years and six months in prison, as well as two years of probation supervision.
Neither Ādamsons nor Silonovs admitted guilt and both said they would appeal the verdict.
The prosecutor, on the other hand, does not intend to appeal the conviction because the sentence handed down by the court is what the prosecutor had asked for.
Ādamsons was arrested in June 2021 on suspicion of spying for Russia, as previously reported. The Saeima stripped him of his immunity from prosecution so he could face charges. After being detained, the court applied custody to the politician, formerly a leading member of the Harmony political party.
On December 17 last year, the Riga City Vidzeme suburb court extended the custody term but gave an opportunity to pay a €30,000 bail. On January 5, a €30,000 bail was lodged and Ādamsons was released from custody.
