Security Service arrests man over terrorism support suspicions

On May 2 this year, the State Security Service (VDD) detained a Latvian non-citizen on suspicion of training for terrorism and distributing content encouraging terrorism to other persons, the VDD said.

On April 22, criminal proceedings were initiated against the person under Article 79.4 (1) and Article 79.6 (1) of the Criminal Law.

The VDD investigation revealed that the person supports the ideology preached by the terrorist group Daesh. The Service has established that the person is heavily involved in correspondence with extremist and pro-terrorist groups on the communication platform "Telegram", where he disseminates ideological materials of terrorist organizations, as well as various instructions for terrorist acts.

In addition to the detention, on May 2 the VDD carried out criminal procedural actions at the person's residence in Rīga.

During the investigations, several data carriers, notes, documents, as well as TNT explosives and ammunition were seized for further examination.

The suspect was remanded in custody as a precautionary measure.

The investigation is continuing.
