Arson charges brought against man in Rīga

Two criminal proceedings have been initiated in connection with the fires in two residential houses in Grīziņkalns, Riga, on May 9, and a man born in 1999 has been arrested, the State Police (VP) said.

As reported, on the evening of May 9 at around 20:00, two apartments in an apartment building on Zvaigžņu Street were on fire. A short time later, information was received that a fire had also broken out in an apartment building on adjacent Laboratorijas Street.

During the investigation, it was established that the same alleged perpetrator was involved in both criminal proceedings. On May 10, a man born in 1999 was detained by the VP in Ventspils.

A search was carried out at the man's residence, which led to additional evidence regarding the alleged perpetrator's involvement in the arson.

Two criminal proceedings were initiated at the Riga Eastern Division of the Riga Regional Directorate of the State Prosecutor's Office for the intentional destruction or damage of another person's property by arson (Article 185 (2) of the Criminal Law). This offense is punishable by imprisonment for up to 10 years and probation supervision for up to three years or without probation supervision.

The man has previous convictions for property and violent offenses.

On May 12, the court remanded the man in custody.

Both criminal proceedings are under active investigation and the motives for the arson are being clarified.
