International operation strikes organized crime in Latvia and Spain

An alleged leader of organized crime in Latvia has been arrested in an international operation, reports LSM's Latvian language service. 

The Latvian State Police (VP) in cooperation with Europol and the Spanish National Police have detained what LSM called "one of the best-known leaders of Latvian organized crime and several members of his criminal group." 

The news report did not however name the individual, nor his associates.

The detainees are suspected of illegal circulation of narcotic substances and legalization of proceeds of crime. The search confiscated cars, expensive watches, ammunition, and 10 pieces of real estate.

A total of 16 persons were detained on September 10 – ten of them in Latvia, and six in Spain. Of the persons detained in Latvia, six were placed in custody as a security measure, and of the persons detained in Spain, four were placed in custody. The criminal investigation continues.

The State Police posted footage from its raids online, with the anti-terrorist "Omega" unit also involved in apprehending potentially dangerous criminals.

With the support of the Spanish National Police, six more people were detained in the Spanish cities of Lloret de Mar and Valencia. Three of the suspects were detained in Spain on the basis of European arrest warrants issued by Latvia.

Seizures reportedly included:

  • more than EUR 110,000 in cash;
  • two firearms, 95 rounds of ammunition, four "airsoft" hand grenades, two body armor;
  • 13 kilograms of marijuana;
  • forged identity documents;
  • four vehicles;
  • cryptocurrency wallets;
  • luxury watches;
  • decisions have been made regarding the seizure of property - ten immovable properties with a total value of around 500,000 euros.

During the joint operation, three Latvian officials participated in the activities carried out in Spain, while a Europol expert was also in Latvia. Europol also provided technical and forensic support, helping to obtain and analyze evidence that will be essential to the further investigation. On the other hand, cooperation between judicial institutions between Latvia and Spain was coordinated by "Eurojust".
