According to VVD, the site has been polluted by tenants over a long period of time, so owners of industrial sites are asked to organize their property management responsibly and make sure the tenants operate under the lease agreement and have received the necessary permits for waste management.
“VVD regularly faces situations where land tenants cause not only environmental litter but already environmental pollution. Such behavior by tenants creates potential risks and complications for further property development if the site is included in the register of contaminated and potentially contaminated sites.
Without taking measures to limit and eliminate pollution in a timely manner, the expected costs for research and management of pollution increase significantly,” said Kalvis Avotiņš, director of the VVD Lielrīga Regional Environmental Board.
Illegal management of construction and municipal waste, organized by various persons, has been detected on several occasions in that area. On this basis, the territory has been included in the list of VVD problematic objects for a long time.
There has also been repeated burning of illegally stored waste in the area. With a view to prosecuting offenders and achieving the removal of waste from the territory, the VVD, in cooperation with the responsible bodies of the State Police and Riga State City, repeatedly directed the administrative means of coercion provided for in the Law against the involved persons.
