Rīga forests twice as polluted this year than in 2021

This year, compared to last year, the municipal company Rīga Forests spending on waste removal has increased more than twice, Latvian Radio reported on September 25.

The company has already spent almost €110,000 to clean the forest from tires, bottles, and other debris. For that amount, more than 400,000 new pines could have been planted.

Therefore, in cooperation with the State Environment Service, the following week Rīga Forests will host a #TīriRīgasMeži #VidesSOS! (Clean Rīga Forests; Environment SOS) campaign to reduce environmental pollution.

“By polluting the forests, we pollute our backyard, our surroundings, where we rest, run, and breathe fresh air,” said Ieva Bērziņa, spokeswoman for Rīga Forests.

“We would much prefer to plant trees, care for young forests and already existing forests, rather than daily waste collection.”

At the time of the campaign, municipalities will be invited to inform the public where large-sized waste and car tires can be transferred free of charge. “People are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity, not to litter the forest,” said Bērziņa.
