On Sunday, October 3, Latvia recorded more than 1,000 daily cases of Covid-19 infection for the fifth day in a row.

The total number of cases detected since the start of the pandemic now stands at 161,641.

Of 9,075 tests carried out in the past 24 hours, 11.4% were positive.

The 14-day cumulative infection rate per 100,000 inhabitants leaped again from 552.7 Saturday to 585.3 Sunday.

Sadly, there was also confirmation of ten more Covid-related deaths, the same number of fatalities as the previous 24-hour period. All of the deceased were aged over 40 years.

The death toll since the start of the pandemic now stands at 2,741.

With the infection wave continuing to strengthen, the level of hospitalizations is becoming more of a focus. According to the latest available figures there are 551 people being treated for Covid-19 symptoms in Latvian hospitals, of which number 62 are displaying serious symptoms.

Meanwhile, the epidemiological situation in the other Baltic states is equally concerning. In Estonia 629 cases were recorded and Lithuania recorded more than 1,500 cases during the last 24 hours.
