Fire at production plant in Tukums Wednesday morning

An elevated-hazard fire broke out in Tukums overnight into Wednesday, May 8, in the clothing company's “Sakta” area, where the fire spread over 1,000 square meters and a firefighter sustained injuries during the extinguishing work, the State Fire and Rescue Service (VUGD) said.

At 5:45 in the morning, VUGD received a call to Lielā Street in Tukums, where a fire had broken out in a hangar-style production building. Upon arriving at the scene, fire rescuers found that the building, which had two-story administrative rooms at one end and a production room at the other, was already burning with an open flame in full area.

At 8:38 firefighters contained the spread of the flames. Inside the building, a forklift and manufacturing preparation materials were on fire.

A firefighter rescuer was injured during the extinguishing operations and has been handed over to the Emergency Medical Service (NMPD) staff.

Fire fighting and structure dismantling work continues at the scene.

As the warehouse burns, there is a distinct smell in the city and residents are urged not to open windows, Tukums municipality says.
