Birth rates still going down in Latvia

Central Statistical Bureau provisional data published on May 13 show that the number of births kept reducing in Q1 2024: 3 154 children were born, which is 267 children or 7.8 % fewer than in Q1 2023 when 3 421 children were born.

There still have been twice as many deaths than births.

In Q1 2024, 7 371 deaths were registered, which is 306 deaths or 4.0 % fewer than in Q1 2023 and 238 deaths or 3.3 % more than in Q1 2020.

1 074 marriages were registered in Q1 2024, which is 437 marriages or 28.9 % fewer than in the corresponding period a year ago. The number of marriages was going up in the recent years, however at the beginning of this year it has gone down once again – 656 marriages (37.9 %) fewer than in Q1 2020 (when more than 1.7 thousand marriages were registered).

On 1 April 2024 Latvia provisionally had a population of 1 million 863 thousand, which is 22.5 thousand people fewer than on 1 April 2023.
