In the first six months, 15 719 deaths were registered. The number is 1 294 deaths or 7.6 % smaller than that recorded in the 1st half of the previous year when a significant mortality increase was recorded. Out of the first six months of the year, the highest mortality was registered in March when 2 968 deaths were recorded, which is 10.1 % more than in March a year ago.
Birth number indicates a downturn as well. Over the first six months, 8 026 births were registered, which is 5.8 % fewer than the number registered in the corresponding period of 2021.
Irrespective of the drop in mortality in the 2nd quarter, it remains high, and the birth number still is almost half smaller than that of deaths. In the first six months of 2022 population of Latvia due to natural population change decreased by almost 7 700 people.
In the first six months of 2022, 4 272 marriages were registered. It is 531 marriages or 14.2 % more than in the corresponding period of the previous year, however, the number still has not reached the pre-pandemic level – in the first six months of 2019 more than 4.7 thousand marriages were concluded.
On 1 July 2022, the provisional number of inhabitants in Latvia accounted for 1 million 896.1 thousand. Population increase may be observed due to immigration, as Ukraine refugees are granted the status of residents irrespective of the time spent in Latvia. This is common practice in all EU countries accepting refugees from Ukraine. Until 31 July 35.8 thousand citizens of Ukraine have received temporary protection in Latvia.
Estimate for Ukrainians in the number of usually residents of Latvia will be made at the beginning of 2023 when all administrative data are received.
