Preliminary data show birth numbers keep going down in Latvia

In Latvia, 5,770 newborns were registered in the first five months of this year, which is 15% or 1,022 newborns fewer than during the relevant period of 2022, according to preliminary data published by the Central Statistical Bureau on July 18.

2,966 boys were registered in Latvia during the first five months of this year, 504 fewer than during the relevant period of 2022, and 2,804 girls or 518 fewer.

In May, 1,202 newborns were registered in Latvia, which is 15.2% less than in the relevant month of last year: 629 boys and 573 girls.

During the first five months of 2023, 12,163 deaths were registered in Latvia, which is 10.5% or 1,430 less than in the first five months of 2022, when 13,593 deaths were registered.

This year, on June 1, Latvia had an estimated population of 1.883 million.

It has already been reported that in 2022 Latvia had the lowest birth rate in the last 100 years. In Latvia, 15,954 newborns were registered last year, which is 8.4% or 1,466 newborns fewer than in 2021.
