Building collapse to be probed for potential construction breaches

In criminal proceedings regarding the collapsed building in central Rīga, possible violations of construction norms or regulations will be investigated, according to LETA's information March 31.

According to the State Police, the criminal proceedings initiated on Thursday in connection with the uninhabited five-story building that collapsed were qualified after Section 239, Paragraph two of the Criminal Law, for violating the construction norms or regulations of buildings, if they resulted in the collapse of the building or part thereof.

The building was on a construction site of the planned Satekles business center of the real estate developer Linstow Baltic. The general manager of the works is Bukoteks Ltd. The Chairman of the board of Bukoteks SIA Aivars Kronbergs told Latvian Radio that the works on the construction site were “strictly in line with the developed and agreed upon project documentation”.

Representatives of Linstow Baltic told LETA that the developer has requested a detailed explanation of the circumstances and causes of the collapse, adding that the facade of the collapsed building was planned to be preserved by integrating it into the new building.
