Colonel Juris Šulte has been appointed as the new chief of the Riga Regional Branch of the Latvian State Police, reported LETA on May 10.

Latvian State Police Chief Ints Kuzis said that Šulte had began his career in the police force in a police precinct in Riga, had been in charge of a murder investigation unit and had participated in many major operations.

Moreover, he also has experience in administrative work as recently he had been serving as the head of the Investigation Support Administration and the deputy chief of the General Criminal Police Administration.

Kuzis said that Šulte's priorities in the new post would be improving the investigation quality, response to ensure public order, and police visibility and accessibility.

"Quality and capacity are the priorities along with current matters that need to be tackled, such as domestic violence and economic crimes,” the Latvian State Police chief said.

The Riga region has the highest crime rate in Latvia and therefore the largest amount of work, Kuzis added.

The chief of the Riga Regional Branch of the Latvian State Police is one of the key posts in the State Police. The Riga police chief also serves as the deputy chief of the State Police.

Previous chief of the Riga Regional Branch, General Guntars Markitans, in March this year stepped down and announced his intention to take the long-service retirement due to him. Markitans resigned soon after he was caught speeding in his car but told the road patrol that he had been testing their vigilance. However, Markitans claimed that his decision to retire had nothing to do with the scandal.
