Deaths outnumbered births by 847 in Latvia during February

Data of the Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) and released March 19 show that in February 2020, 1,304 newborns were registered in civil status registry offices in Latvia - a figure which which is 6 % below that registered in the same month of 2019.

In February, 2,151 deaths were registered, which is 11 % less than in February a year ago. However, the number of deaths exceeded number of births by 847. Natural population increase in Latvia has been negative since 1991, with population decline and the demographic situation becoming one of the key concerns of policymakers.

In February 722 marriages were registered in Latvia, which is 189 marriages more than in the corresponding month a year ago.
