People's eyes widened and their pupils shrank as the sun made a rare appearance just when a giant flag was about to be hoisted up in Liepāja's J. Čakste square on December 8.

The 50 m2 flag, up high on a 35 meter mast is one of a series of major national standards to appear in Latvia ahead of its centenary in 2018, with the most notable being the king-size flag that was flied on AB Dambis in October.

Raimonds Bergmanis, the country's defense minister was present along a military brass band and a crowd of hundreds.

"May this flag be a lighthouse, and widely fly, because we know that Liepāja is the city of winds.. may it fly eternally on this mast," he said to a cheerful audience of all ages and walks of life.
