Survey: 29% of Rigans would like to live elsewhere in Latvia

Nearly a third of Riga inhabitants would like to live in another place in Latvia, according to new research center SKDS survey results, Latvian Television reported August 13.

Sociologists asked Latvian citizens in Riga: "It's frequently heard that for one reason or another people say they want to move outside Riga. What about you?"

29% responded they would like to move away from Riga. Of those, 20,1% would rather go away but 8,8% definitely.

Of the 61% who said they would not like to move, 25,4% said they would rather not, but 35,7% said they would definitely not want to move away.

The reasons to move away for those who would like to, are mainly linked to ecology. Although Riga is considered a green city, most of those who would like to move away said they miss green environment, nature, as well as peace and quiet (25,5%) Material and financial aspects, prices are the reason for 13,9%. People also mention place of residence (9,9%), population density (8,6%), preferring countryside and small-town life (7,4%), Riga government and corruption issues (7,4%) transport issues (7,3%), population, including national proportions (7,0%), and cleanliness issues (6,7%).

Sociologists also asked whether some have declared themselves in Riga just for the upcoming City Council elections. 3,5% said yes.

The survey was conducted in July 2020, with 1008 respondents.
