Latvia's top seeded women tennis players both made it through the first round of the Wimbledon singles tournament in the London July 3.

Number 18 seed Anastasija Sevastova beat Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan in straight sets (6-1, 7-6) while French Open winner and number 13 seed Jelena Ostapenko secured a topsy-turvy victory over Belarus' Alexandra Sasnovich in three sets (6-0, 1-6, 6-3).

After the match Ostapenko said: "[In the] First set I was playing pretty well, very confident. Second set she started to play good, served better. I missed a little bit like unforced errors. And then third set I played good, I think," according to the WTA website.

She previewed her Wimbledon appearance in this video interview.

In the second round Ostapenko will play young Canadian Françoise Abanda. Meanwhile Sevastova will have to take on the British crowd as she battles local favorite Heather Watson.

But there is more Latvian action July 4 with the always-entertaining Ernests Gulbis taking on Victor Estrella Burgos of the Dominican Republic.
