Car-gobbling Ģertrūdes Street to be reconstructed this year

Reconstruction of Rīga's car-munching Ģertrūdes Street is planned this year, Rīga City Council's Transport Department head Vitālijs Reinbahs said February 26.

It is planned to preserve the street's old-timey appearance and cobblestones. The bicycle lane will be smoothed. Reinbahs said the street's paving look will stylish, preserving the historical tinge.

The surface of the street is to be raised up, the height difference between the sidewalk and the vehicle section will be a mere 5 centimeters, and crossings will be highlighted, which will make it easier for pedestrians to move about.

The street redevelopment is planned in three phases, and the exact total costs are not yet known.

As reported by LSM numerous times, last year Ģertrūdes Street became known for having an appetite for consuming vehicles, gobbling up three innocent cars.
