Skulls found under storm-toppled tree in Bauska

Several skulls and bones have been discovered under a tree that broke off in the storm near Bauska castle, LETA news agency reported July 12.

State Police spokeswoman Rūta Strautniece confirmed that excavation work was planned at the site of the skulls and bones of two people to see if the ground was hiding any more human remains. The bones will be submitted for forensic examination to determine their age.

Māris Skanis, director of the Bauska Castle Museum, explained that the bones could be from ancient burials or evidence of a 20th-century war. However, this will be determined by an expert examination.

Skanis said that tree branches near the castle were broken by the storm, but the castle itself was not damaged. Although electricity has not yet been restored and telephones are not working, the castle staff are ready to welcome tourists.

In Bauska, work has been underway since early this morning to repair the effects of the storm and clean up the city. In many places, people have already cleared and sawed down trees, but there are a lot of them.
