After the dismissal of Economics Minister Jānis Vitenbergs (National Alliance, formerly KPV LV), the KPV LV faction has advanced businessman Pēteris Šmidre for the position, KPV LV Chair Māris Možvillo told Latvian Radio May 14.

As reported earlier by LSM, Jānis Vitenbergs, who was elected in the Saeima from the faction KPV LV, after deciding to join the National Alliance (NA), was withdrawn from the position by his former party and Saeima faction. Therefore, KPV LV had to advance a new candidate.

However, National Alliance said Thursday that they would invite the Prime Minister and all coalition partners to agree on changes to the coalition agreement, providing for the possibility that NA advance the new Economics Minister.

"This minister would be independent of parties, which means that the issue of 'seats' would be removed," said Možvillo.

Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš will meet all coalition parties Friday to agree on further cooperation.

Pēteris Šmidre, former co-owner and CEO of telecoms company Baltkom TV and president of Latvian Telecommunications association, has been referred to in the public as "the first legal Latvian multimillionaire" and "Latvian Bill Gates".
