Government okays EUR 31 million for surveillance on Latvian-Russian border

On Tuesday, July 16, the government authorized the Latvian State Radio and Television Center (LVRTC) to undertake financial commitments of EUR 31.67 million) to ensure the construction of technological infrastructure along the Latvian-Russian border, LETA reports.

LVTRC will implement the so-called smart border project which foresees the construction of technological surveillance infrastructure.

The money is needed for the development of the construction planning documentation, construction works, author supervision, and purchase of related equipment and materials.

The matter was viewed in a closed-door session, so no further details are available.

The government also took note of the information of the Ministry of the Interior that the construction of the technological infrastructure necessary for the surveillance of the external land border of the country on the border between Latvia and Belarus (construction phase 2) will be provided with the support of the Financial Instrument for Border Management and Visa Policy.

In order to cover the costs related to the construction of the technological infrastructure on the Latvian-Russian land border (construction phases 3 and 4), the Ministry of the Interior plans to reallocate EUR 131,604 this year and EUR 17.68 million and EUR 16.76 million in 2025 and 2026 respectively.
