Civil evacuation exercise ahead in 'Namejs' training in Rīga

During the National Defense Exercise "Namejs 2024", from Friday, September 20, to September 21, the Riga Municipality Civil Protection and Operational Information Directorate (CAOIP) will conduct a practical evacuation and accommodation process.

Gints Reinsons, Head of CAOIP, said that the safe assembly, transportation, and accommodation of the population in a temporary shelter will be organized.

The training will last 24 hours and will involve volunteers and material and technical resources of the Riga Municipality Civil Protection and Operational Information Directorate, as well as various municipal departments.

"Such exercises play an important role in building community resilience," said Reinsons, thanking all volunteers and representatives of the state and municipal departments for their participation in planning the exercise.

The planned scenario is to evacuate the residents of the neighborhoods from two locations, one on each bank of the Daugava River, with an emergency "72-hour" bag, using a public bus.

The evacuees will be taken to an accommodation place where they will be provided with basic needs such as shelter, sleeping places, water, food, etc.

The accommodation points will test the ability of persons to act in an emergency and to perform civil protection activities, such as preparing and placing sandbags at the windows of a building, taping windows, cooking food in the field, staying overnight using temporary accommodation equipment, without forgetting to observe the internal rules of the accommodation place and a real-life role-play of the training program. At the end of the training, evacuees will be taken back to their starting points.
