Cable thief group detained in Rīga

Police have arrested a group of three people who stole cables from utility shafts, construction sites and apartment buildings that have not been put into operation, State Police (VP) said September 16.

On August 31 this year, State Police (VP) officers arrested two persons on suspicion of stealing cables and work tools from a building on Priedaines Street in Riga. Both detainees had previously been in police custody for the theft of cables, as well as for theft from dwellings.

Six searches were carried out in the vehicles and residences of the detainees.

During the searches, the police recovered and seized allegedly stolen items, including cable ducts and work tools, as well as several mobile phones and SIM cards.

Alleged narcotic drugs, knives and two unregistered gas pistols were also seized from the persons. A grenade-like object was also recovered and handed over for forensic examination.

On September 11, another member of this criminal group was detained on suspicion of stealing telecommunication cables and wires from communication shafts in Rīga, Riekstu Street. The person was arrested immediately after the theft, while he was carrying the stolen cables to his car. The man had also been previously convicted of property crimes related to home invasion.

Information at the disposal of the police indicates that the detained persons may have committed 10 or more thefts from various objects.

Several criminal proceedings have been initiated.

All members of the criminal group were remanded in custody.
