Latvians aged over 40 might be able to join army in future

The Ministries of Defense, Interior, and Justice will prepare changes to the regulation allowing the continuation of service while receiving a pension for interior service officers and soldiers who have reached retirement age, LETA reported September 19.

It is also envisaged that people above the age of 40 will be able to start their service. At present, Latvian citizens aged between 18 and 40 are accepted for professional service.

These proposals will be prepared on the initiative of the Minister of the Interior, Dimitrijs Trofimovs, State Secretary of the Ministry of the Interior, confirmed to LETA.

According to a government decision on Tuesday, the Interior Ministry and the Justice Ministry will prepare such amendments and submit them to the government together with draft laws related to the 2025 budget.

The Secretary of State confirmed that such changes were necessary because of the shortage of people in the home affairs services.

Trofimovs also said that such a regulation exists, for example, in Estonia.
