First 'writing festival' in Latvia to take place in August

On August 11, the first writing festival "Rakstivāls" dedicated to writing will be held in the creative quarter "Zeit" in Līgatne, which will be a special, one-day festival that has never been seen in the Baltics or northern Europe, according to its organizers.

Entry to the festival will be free.

As festival organizers point out, understanding writing, text, and message is crucial in an age of propaganda when digital information prevails over critical analysis of text. The festival will also talk about the impact of artificial intelligence.

"We engage in writing from kindergarten to the presidential Chancellery and the Nobel Prize. Anyone can write. It is the most democratic form of creative expression. We all write every day, often without even realizing it.

"At the festival, brilliant writers and professionals from different fields will tell stories about writing, while workshops will have the opportunity to get to grips with trying the open techniques virtually.

"Special workshops will also be in place for children, as well as therapeutic writing workshops for self-healing experiences. Writing is and is not a basic skill – it is because it is one of the first we learn. But its further potential remains largely undiscovered. Just as few are aware that they are floating in the sea of texts and that the written word has a huge impact not just on education, art but identity and national security," says one of the festival's promoters and organizers, writer Inga Žolude.

"Rakstivāls" is organized by the society "Civic Initiative Centre" in cooperation with the creative quarter "Zeit". The festival is supported by the Culture Capital Foundation and others.
