"Baltijas ceļa" skrējiens sasniedz Rīgu

Baltic Way race reaches Rīga

Ultramarathoner Rūdolfs Birnbaums has taken on the challenge of running two marathons in one day, eight days in a row. He is running the Baltic Way as it was 35 years ago. Starting in Lithuania, he reached Latvia and Rīga on Monday, August 20.

The route starts from Vilnius in Lithuania and connects all three Baltic capitals. With 85 kilometers run each day, the total will be 678. This is a symbolic commemoration of the Baltic Way - people joining hands to link Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia in a living chain and demonstrate to the world the Baltic determination to regain their independence and leave the Soviet Union.

"It was a great feeling running into Latvia yesterday. We were greeted immediately, we ran with them all evening. Once again, I want to send a big thank you to those runners who ran with us all the way to Iecava, because they helped to keep the rhythm going when fatigue got the best of us. And today, new runners are running with us," said Rūdolfs, the author of the idea "Run the Baltic Way".

Rūdolfs also received encouragement from Prime Minister Evika Siliņa (New Unity). "Fantastic! A completely crazy person! But in a good way I mean! The Balts are tenacious, persistent, sporty, healthy. Thank you for your strength!"

The Latvian stage of the Baltic Way was the longest. The same is true for this race. Organizers are inviting everyone to join in for a part of the run.  The race will finish in Tallinn on the anniversary of the Baltic Way, Friday August 23.
