Latvia's Olympic ice hockey dream is still alive

The national ice hockey team of Latvia started the qualifying tournament for the 2026 Winter Olympic Games with a valuable 4:2 victory over Slovenia on Thursday night in Rīga.

The hosts will still have to meet the strong national teams of Ukraine and France, with only the winners of the four-team tournament being handed the valuable ticket to the next Winter Olympic tournament in Italy.

The Latvian national team will play its next game on Friday against Ukraine, which started the tournament with a 2:7 loss to France. Tournament favorites Latvia and France will face up to each other on Sunday in what could be the decisive clash of the tournament.
