"Amber Latvijas balzams" owner declared "extremist" in Russia

A Russian court on Wednesday, July 24, declared billionaire Yuri Shefler, owner of the "Amber Latvijas balzams" alcoholic beverages company, and his companies an "extremist association" and decided to confiscate part of Shefler's assets in Russia and hand them over to the state, news agency LETA reports.

In its ruling, the Tambov District Court fully upheld a claim by the Russian Prosecutor General's Office because Shefler's companies finance the Ukrainian Armed Forces Relief Fund, the court's press service reported.

The action had been brought by the Prosecutor General's Office against Shefler and his Luxembourg-based companies Amber Beverage Group Holding and Stoli Group, which he controls. The Prosecutor General's Office requested the transfer to the State of part of the businessman's assets located in Russia - shares in Amber Talvis, a distillery in the Tambov region, and SPI-RVVK, a company in Königsberg (Karaliaučius), as well as part of the capital of RVVK.

This is generally not a surprise as similar seizures of companies have occurred in Russia in the past.

"Amber Latvijas balzams" is part of Amber Beverage Group Holding, an international alcoholic beverages production and distribution group, which owns 89.99% of the company's shares. "Amber Latvijas balzams" shares are listed on Nasdaq Riga Stock Exchange's second list.
