Protesters ask for safe bicycle crossing of Vanšu Bridge

The organization "Pilsēta cilvēkiem/City for People" is protesting on the sidewalk of the Vanšu Bridge on Tuesday, August 13, morning, calling on the Riga City Council to ensure that all road users can safely cross the bridge, including by creating an additional cycle lane on the carriageway.

As the reconstruction of the Vanšu Bridge could start only in 2026, activists are urging the city council to implement temporary solutions on the bridge now.

For several years now, guardrails have been installed on the pavement for safety reasons, making the section of the bridge shared by pedestrians and cyclists significantly narrower. To address the problems this causes, activists are calling for a separate lane for cyclists to make it safer for pedestrians.

As an interim option, before the bridge is rebuilt, the lane widths could be re-marked and a separated cycle lane at least 1.5 meters wide could be created with temporary barriers in the section where the pavement width is significantly narrowed.

This solution would decongest the pavement and provide a convenient way for cyclists to cross the bridge without disturbing pedestrians or motorists on the carriageway. At the same time, the number of lanes would not be reduced, but the speed limit would need to be reduced to 50 km/h in both directions, especially given the pre-accident condition of the bridge, said the organization "City for People".
