Take extra care around tractors this harvest season

Another call has gone out urging the public to be particularly careful on the roads while large pieces agricultural machinery are out and about.

The Farmers Saeima (ZS) organization points out that this year, due to the high temperatures in spring and early summer, the harvesting of peas, rapeseed and even wheat has started unusually early and at full capacity in all regions of Latvia, meaning combine harvesters, tractors and other pieces of equipment are also in evidence earlier than is usual.

Harvesting will likely continue throughout July, August and possibly until the middle of September.

"Heavy machinery is involved in harvesting, so motorists must be in extra careful mode. Rural machinery on the roads 'requires' double attention from all road traffic users. Young and not inexperienced drivers do not realize this. Already this year a number of problematic situations were recorded when drivers, especially young and inexperienced ones, made ill-advised overtaking maneuvers that could have potentially ended badly for everyone involved. Therefore, we ask you to be very careful and not to make hasty decisions," said Juris Lazdiņš, chairman of the ZS.

The plea comes soon after a similar appeal from the Association for Sustainable Agriculture and Rural Environment, as previously reported by LSM.
