Two detained for migrant smuggling in Latvian border area

On Saturday, August 10, two persons were detained in the Augšdaugava district for transporting people who had illegally crossed the state border, the State Border Guard said.

While carrying out controls along the border area and border regime, border guards stopped an Opel Vectra Station Wagon in the Augšdaugava municipality, driven by a Lithuanian citizen with a Latvian non-citizen in the passenger seat.

During a document check, it was found that 7 persons without travel documents, valid visas, and residence permits were present in the car and in the luggage compartment.

Criminal proceedings have been initiated against the Lithuanian citizen and the Latvian non-citizen for knowingly providing a person with an opportunity to stay illegally in the Republic of Latvia if such an opportunity is provided to more than five persons (Article 285.1 (3) of the Criminal Law).

The above-mentioned acts can be punished by imprisonment for a term from 2 to 8 years.
