Alleged murder plotter set free by Rīga court

On August 13, the Riga Regional Court overturned the decision of the court of first instance to remand in custody Artjoms Babenko, the alleged mastermind of the planned murder of police officer Romāns Jašins, the court told newswire LETA.

Babenko's lawyer, Egons Rusanovs, said that the security measure had been fully revoked and the first instance court's decision was found to be unjustified.

Earlier, the court of first instance decided to remand Babenko in custody as a security measure. The detention was appealed to the Regional Court.

Artjoms Babenko is the son of Aleksandrs Babenko, on trial in the high-profile case of the murdered lawyer Mārtiņš Bunkus.

As reported by LSM, on July 25, the law enforcement officers of the Riga Region Administration of the State Police arrested five persons on suspicion of conspiracy to commit murder. Two of the detainees have previously been punished for the distribution of narcotic substances.

The information obtained during the investigation suggests that the perpetrators may have been preparing to kill a high-ranking State Police (VP) official and that the crime may have been related to the professional activity of this police officer and carried out for revenge, according to a statement issued by the VP and told to journalists by Head of the Criminal Police Andrejs Grišins.
