'Bank courier' scammer detained in Daugavpils, Latvia

In July this year, officers of the Economic Crime Combating Division of the State Police in Daugavpils detained a man who is suspected of defrauding two persons, police said July 29.

The man, born in 1985, is known to have posed as a bank courier, police said.

Preliminary information indicates that the detainee defrauded a man born in 1955, who suffered a loss of €5,000. In the second case, the fraudster defrauded a man born in 1963 of €2,850.

It is known that the man came to the victims as a bank courier using a taxi service. The information obtained so far indicates that the taxi service provider was not involved in the fraud scheme.

On July 15, the man was detained by State Police officers. At the time of the arrest, cash amounting to €17 510 was seized. The suspect was remanded in custody. The detainee has not previously been seen by the State Police.

Both cases are punishable by criminal liability for fraud.
