Latvian minister asks allies for more air defenses

On Wednesday, September 11, Latvian Minister of Defense Andris Sprūds met with the Deputy Commander of the Allied High Command in Europe, Admiral Sir Keith Blount of the United Kingdom, and the Commander of the NATO Air Force Command, General James B. Hecker of the United States, both of whom are in Latvia on a working visit.

According to the ministry's account of the meeting with the NATO top brass, Sprūds discussed the recent incident related to the incursion of an armed "Shahed" type drone of the Russian Federation into the territory of Latvia from Belarus.

"During the meeting, Sprūds called for strengthening NATO's airspace defense and promoting the allies' presence in Latvia both through increased deterrence activities and through the implementation of an active NATO air defense rotation model, which the allies agreed on at the NATO Washington Summit this summer," said the ministerial release.

As widely reported, on September 7, a "Shahed" type drone fell in the Gaigalava parish of Rēzekne region. Following the incident, the Ministry of Defense has started active consultations with allies who have recently faced similar incidents. Romania reported a similar incident a day later.

There were no casualties in the Latvian incident and no damage was caused other than a small hole in the ground. An investigation into precisely what happened continues and fragments of the drone are being studied carefully.
