Rīga CASSINI hackathon applications open

Until September 5, it is possible to apply for the 7th CASSINI hackathon, dedicated to the use of satellite data for the realization of sustainable development business ideas, reports Labs of Latvia.

The hackathon will take place in Rīga from September 13 to 15 and will be held in two parts. First, local hackathons will be held simultaneously in 10 countries, including Latvia. Their winners will participate in the European-level hackathon, which will take place online on September 18.

The Latvian event will be held at the Science and Innovation Center of the Riga Technical University, is open to all interested parties - from technology and environmental specialists to entrepreneurs, communication experts, students and enthusiasts. Every participant will have the opportunity to submit their idea or join other teams in projects related to sustainable development and satellite data.

Hackathon participants will be provided with expert support in satellite data analysis, business and communication. Open-access data from the European Union's Space Program, including the Earth observation program Copernicus and the satellite navigation programs Galileo and EGNOS, will be available to the participants of the event exploring the possibilities of using new technologies. 

The range of challenges offered at the three-day event is wide-ranging. Cooperation partners have set specific tasks including the development of digital solutions for the Rīga smart city concept; The Latvian National Peat Society is looking for ideas for monitoring peat and bogs and calculating greenhouse gas emissions; SIA "Privātais mežs" is looking to develop sustainable solutions for forestry, and SIA "Gravity Team" wants participants to use blockchain technologies working with satellite data.

The event is organized by the Latvian Space Industry Association in cooperation with the scientific communication platform "researchLatvia" created by the Ministry of Education and Science.
