New type of food delivery in Latvia emerging

A new type of food delivery in Latvia - thermo-regulated parcel machines, or, basically, big fridges - has arrived, Zemgale regional television reported on July 8.

Some small producers, who find it almost impossible to conquer the supermarket shelves because of their small volumes, are satisfied with this delivery option and see an opportunity to reach their customers this way.

Juris from Inčukalns used a thermo-regulated parcel machine for the first time to receive his lamb order. "This parcel machine is completely unknown, so I have been looking for a while to find where it is. The lamb was delivered here. They put the packet in for me, like they do at all the parcel lockers, a text message came and I went in and got it," said Juris.

The temperature in the thermoregulated locker room of the sub-unit is kept at +6 degrees by an air cooler behind the wall. The company IziPizi came up with the idea because it is easy to sell food on the Internet, but there is no one to deliver it at the right temperature.

"A small producer who has produced 10 units of a product, has to sell it, then has to set up his online shop and look for a place to sell it. We realized that we needed logistics points, self-service logistics points that are like a big fridge," Rolands Dzenis, founder of IziPizi, said about the idea.

This service will also be used on the Jaunsenči farm, which raises pigs. It is too expensive to sell the products themselves in Latvian outlets. A parcel machine is a solution.

"We have to live with the times because everything is evolving, everything is happening. Our products will be available in principle throughout Latvia. Anyone will be able to order and the next day it will be at the place of their choice," said Edgars Krastiņš, the owner of the Jaunsenči farm.

The idea is still unfamiliar to the population, but some of those surveyed support it.

"For people who don't have a garden and don't know any farmers, it could be useful," said Inga, a resident of Bauska.

"I think I would use it, yes!" said Bauska resident Vitauts.

Currently, there are thermoregulated parcel machines in Riga, Tukums, and Dundaga and five warehouses or exchange points in Valmiera, Taurene, Ikšķile, and two in Riga. There will also be one in Bauska in the near future.
