Baltic Way envelope and stamp underway

August 23 this year marks 35 years since the world witnessed one of the largest non-violent resistance actions in the history of the 20th century - the Baltic Way.

To commemorate the historical significance of this event, Latvian Postal Service (Latvijas Pasts) will issue a special envelope and stamp, says Latvijas Pasts.

The envelope dedicated to the 35th anniversary of the Baltic Way will be available in 500 copies.

The design of the envelope and stamp was created by artist Ģirts Grīva. The envelope is designed using a photograph by H. Leppikson from the Estonian National Archives, a photograph by H. Burmeistars from the Latvian National Archives and a photograph by J. Juknevičius from the Lithuanian Central State Archives. In addition, the cover features a personalized stamp designed with a photograph by V. Mihailovskis from a private archive.

The non-violent demonstration of protest and solidarity took place on the 50th anniversary of the signing of the 1939 German-Soviet non-aggression treaty (Molotov-Ribbentrop pact) and its secret additional protocols, which divided the spheres of influence in Eastern Europe and led to the occupation and annexation of the Baltic States. The Baltic Way became one of the most ambitious, non-violent resistance actions in the history of the 20th century.

Latvijas Pasts started issuing stamps and special philatelic materials for the Baltic Way as early as 1999.
