Renovated Valmiera Theater opens

On Thursday, September 5, the Valmiera Theater hosted the long-awaited opening event of the renovated house after several years of reconstruction and renovation works, marking an important stage in the cultural life of Valmiera, said representatives of State Real Estate (VNĪ).

During the reconstruction and renovation project, significant improvements were made to the theatre. Seating areas were extended and modernized, a new Black Box auditorium was created and the working space for the theatre staff was improved.

The funding raised by the Ministry of Culture and Valmiera Theater amounted to EUR 16,310,262, of which EUR 9,547,275 was provided by the European Regional Development Fund, while the remaining costs were covered by the state budget and Valmiera Theater.

The Valmiera Drama Theater building was constructed in 1996 according to a design by architects Modris Ģelzis, Olita Upaciere and Juris Gusevs on the site where the Latvian Society House once stood. This stone building with two halls, a theatre museum, an art salon and a café is recognized not only as a culturally and historically significant building, but also as a shining example of modern architecture of its time. The theatre building is also part of the Valmiera St. Simon's Church and medieval fortifications of Valmiera Castle area, which are architectural monuments of national importance.

During the reconstruction of the Valmiera Theater, the administrative block designed by architect Modris Ģelzis was preserved, while the technically and visually outdated annexes were demolished.
