Latvian Television speculates about possible European election results

New Unity and the National Alliance could have won the largest number of votes in the European Parliament elections in Latvia, according to what Latvian Television referred to only as "unofficial data" June 9.

The official results will be published together with the results from other European Union countries on Sunday night.

Latvia will get nine seats in the next European Parliament, an increase of one seat on the eight it held in the outgoing parliament.

According to LTVs "unofficial data" the National Alliance and New Unity are in line to get two seats each while For Latvia's Development, the United List, Latvia In First Place, Harmony and the Progressives are in line for one seat each. However, that distribution of seats could be affected by whether the For Stability! party manages to secure enough votes for a mandate.

Kristīne Saulīte, chairperson of the Central Election Commission (CVK), emphasized in an interview with LTV that the official results will be known only around midnight on Monday, June 10. Regarding the unofficial data, she said that she could not confirm it.

Therfore, election-watchers would be well advised to treat the above as speculation – though it will no doubt provide grist to the discussion mill throughout Sunday.

Acording to the official Europe-wide results portal, the publication of live national results and seat projections will start on Sunday 9 June from 19:00 Rīga time at the earliest. A first aggregated projection of the composition of the European Parliament as a whole can be expected shortly after 21:15 according to the official portal.
