Putin-praiser gets two months in prison

The Riga City Court has sentenced a young man to two months in prison for supporting war crimes and praising Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, according to a publicly available verdict, LETA reports July 12.

The defendant had agreed on this sentence with the prosecutor.

The criminal proceedings against the unnamed young man, who was arrested on March 28 for publicly committing war crimes and praising Putin, were handed over to the prosecutor's office on April 5.

The Criminal Law provides for imprisonment of up to five years, probation supervision, community service, or a fine for such a crime.

On March 28, a young man born in 2002 shouted several phrases expressing support for war crimes and Putin, in Russian, in an aggressive tone in the Old Town of Riga, knowing that his words would be heard by the Riga Municipal Police, by persons who were at the scene and by any passers-by.

The young man was under the influence of alcohol.
