Migrant driver crashes while fleeing Latvian border guards

While fleeing border guards, a Georgian citizen who carried four persons without valid visas and residence permits crashed on the Dagda-Aglona motorway on Friday, July 12, the State Border Guard said.

Border guards spotted a BMW 318 carrying "suspicious" persons on the P60 (Dagda-Aglona) motorway and launched its pursuit. The driver quickly picked up speed. Border guards turned on lights and an audible signal, but the driver did not respond and continued to pick up speed until he lost control of the vehicle and drove into a ditch.

The driver of the car and four passengers ran. A short time later, attracting a K9 specialist with a service dog, all individuals were detained.

The driver of the car was found to be a Georgian citizen who carried four persons without valid visas and residence permits.

Criminal proceedings have been initiated against a citizen of Georgia regarding the deliberate provision of a person with the possibility to reside illegally in the Republic of Latvia, if such possibility has been ensured for two or more persons (Section 285.1, Paragraph two of the Criminal Law).
