Five arrested in connection with suspected murder plot

Latvian State Police officers have detained five persons on suspicion of possible preparation for the murder of a state official, State Police press spokeswoman Simona Grāvīte confirmed to the LETA newswire July 25.

Searches have reportedly been carried out at several locations, including cars, but police are not providing more information at the moment – but they promise to do so on Friday, July 26.

It is believed that the case is linked to Aleksandrs Babenko, who is already on trial in the high-profile case of the murdered lawyer Mārtiņš Bunkus. Unofficial sources suggest Babenko's son Artjoms may be one of those apprehended Thursday on suspicion of plotting to kill a State Police employee. As mentioned above, police are due to give more details on Friday.
