Government extends Latvian army's participation in NATO's Iraq mission

On Tuesday, July 9, the government endorsed the extension of the participation of the National Armed Forces (NBS) in the NATO mission in Iraq until November 1, 2026.

The adoption of the draft decision remains to be decided by the Parliament.

Latvia is currently contributing three soldiers to the mission, who are deployed at the military headquarters in Baghdad, Iraq. Taking into account the dynamic developments, the needs of the Iraqi capability development, and the future needs of the operation, Latvia may, if necessary, consider an increase of the NBS contingent in the operation.

The main tasks of the NATO Mission in Iraq are to support and advise the development of Iraq's national defense, security institutions and civilian sector.

All 32 NATO Member States and two partner countries, Australia and Austria, are involved in the implementation of the mission.

The Ministry of Defense said that it is important for Latvia to continue to support this operation, demonstrating both political and military solidarity with strategically important partners.
