Latvia plans to legally facilitate testing of military vehicles on roads

The Ministry of Transport has submitted proposals to amend the Road Traffic Law, including facilitating long-term testing of Latvian-made military equipment, newswire LETA reported August 10.

As explained in the proposal, the law currently provides that special military equipment and its trailers are registered in the National Armed Forces (NBS) register. However, the NBS Vehicle Register is intended and maintained only for the registration of special military equipment owned by the NBS.

The procedure for registration of special military equipment, as laid down in the Law, was introduced without the possibility that special military equipment and its trailers could be owned by another institution or merchant. Thus, the procedure for registration of equipment that is not owned by the NBS but is manufactured by a commercial company that has obtained a military manufacturer's certificate issued by the Ministry of Defense is currently not regulated.

Therefore, it is necessary to amend the law to determine who will register special military equipment manufactured in Latvia so that it can participate in road traffic.

These changes are largely made to accommodate the testing of vehicles produced at the new 6x6 Patria plant in Valmiera.
