Latvian-Belarusian border fence project completed

The construction of a fence of almost 145 kilometers along the Latvian-Belarusian border has been completed, the State Enterprise "Valsts nekustamie īpašumi" (State Real Estate) said July 31.

By the end of this year, the construction of the necessary infrastructure, including patrol trails, footbridges, and other solutions needed to protect the border, will continue along the full 173 kilometers of the border.

Last year, the fence was completed along 112 kilometers of land, and this year, the fence along public waters was completed step by step until the end of July.

Minister of the Interior Rihards Kozlovskis (New Unity) said that the fence was built professionally and within the planned deadlines.

Currently, under the management of VNĪ, the construction of the necessary infrastructure is continuing, as well as the construction of other solutions in two sections - the River Daugava section and a section around Lake Riču, where a border fence is not being constructed.

The sections without a border fence - the 16.7 km stretch of the Daugava and the construction of the dredging road and infrastructure around Lake Riču - are planned to be completed by summer 2025.

The total cost of the construction of the Latvian-Belarusian border fence and infrastructure and related services and works is €125.35 million, including €3.6 million from EU funds.
