Lavandu audzēšana Latvijā kļūst populārāka

Lavender business developing in Latvia

July is the most active time for lavender growers. In recent years, lavender cultivation in Latvia has developed, but major operators recognize that in Latvia's climate this activity cannot be considered a stable source of profit, Latvian Television reported July 31.

Inga Purava, the owner of the almost one-and-a-half-hectare lavender field 'Lillas Lavender', became interested in growing this crop in 2006. The first harvest was expected four years later. There is no ideal lavender variety for Latvia and, in her opinion, each lavender tolerates different weather conditions.

The weather in Latvia is not as good as in the south and it is difficult to compete with Italy, Spain or Bulgaria in the lavender business.

"We put everything we earn back immediately. Whether it's buying a tractor, machinery or a tool that's needed for the job, I wouldn't say it's all profit here," said Inga.

Lavender has bloomed most in Zemgale this year, but this spring has not been kind to growers.

Edīte Bēvalde, the owner of the lavender field in Skalbes, said that the bushes froze in winter, but most of them have recovered. "This is one of the most profitable businesses in the world on a small area. Each person has their own idea why they are doing it. I did it to fill my plot, to make a place for my own pleasure," said Edith.

The Ministry of Agriculture pointed out that based on area payment support data, last year, 10.5 hectares of lavender grew in Latvia, in 2022, 9 hectares, and in 2021, just under 8 hectares.

According to Eurostat, Latvia exported lavender or lavender oil worth €18,400 in 2023, which is almost €10,000 more than in 2022. It should be noted that the export figures also include re-exports, i.e. products exported by other countries via Latvia. The main commodity produced from this plant is essential oils, but more original ways are also being sought, such as putting lavender in shoes to remove moisture and give a fresh scent.

The largest lavender fields in Latvia are in Zemgale.
