Pets evacuated from flooded shelter in Jelgava, Latvia Monday

An animal shelter at Helmaņa Street 8 in Jelgava, under the supervision of the Latvian University of Life Sciences and Technologies, has been flooded due to the storm, the LETA news agency reports July 29.

According to information published on the "X" website, the organization is appealing to people who could help with the relocation of the animals, as well as with the necessary transport.

Latvian Television observed that the animals were being evacuated with the help of volunteers. None of the animals was injured. Information on social networks shows that the animals have been taken to the animal shelter "Labās mājas".

"Now we are trying to do what we can still do. We are all underwater," representatives of the shelter told LETA news agency.

Streets in Jelgava were already flooded on the evening of July 28. On Monday, the municipality urged people to stay at home or at least not to use private transport.

Meanwhile, the Jelgava municipality said that 6,400 customers in the municipality were without electricity, and in several parishes, there were disruptions in internet communications and water supply. A quarter of the annual normal rainfall occurred overnight.
