The Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs (PMLP) has sent out 3,255 information letters about the expiry of residence permits to those Russian citizens who have not submitted documents requesting the status of a long-term resident of the European Union (EU), PMLP Chief Maira Roze told Latvian Television on October 5.

PMLP previously stated that 3,541 persons had not submitted documents requesting the status of a long-term resident of the EU or had not applied for a re-examination of their official language competence. In accordance with Paragraph 58 of transitional provisions of the Immigration Law, their permanent residence permits expired on September 2 this year.

Consequently, these persons must leave the territory of the Republic of Latvia by November 30, 2023.

Roze said that of those who have done nothing to obtain a residence permit, about 200 people do not have a declared residence address at all, so PMLP cannot contact them, and some more people have not been asked to leave the country because they are known to be outside Latvia already.

In December, the PMLP will check whether these persons crossed the border and left Latvia. If this has not been done, the Board will send information to the Border Guard requesting them to check whether these persons are in the country or not, and if the persons are in Latvia, an order to leave the country will follow.
